Skopje remains one of Europe's more obscure business class puzzles, precisely because no carrier flies there nonstop from New England. There is no direct business class from Hartford to Skopje — every itinerary routes through a major European or transatlantic hub, and that reality is exactly what makes routing choice the single biggest lever affecting comfort on this roughly 10.5-hour total journey. Delta offers the most natural jumping-off point, connecting BDL travelers through JFK or Boston onto transatlantic widebodies before a regional carrier completes the hop into SKP, while Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines route through Frankfurt/Munich and Istanbul respectively, each offering a distinctly different long-haul experience before the short final leg.
Of the three, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is my preferred routing for this itinerary. Istanbul Airport's connections to Skopje are frequent, and Turkish's business class cabin on their widebody aircraft—complete with their signature onboard chef service and a lounge experience in IST that rivals any in Europe—makes the long connection feel like part of the journey rather than a chore. Lufthansa's Frankfurt or Munich connection is worth considering if you can catch one of their A350 or 747-8 business class configurations on the transatlantic leg, and Frankfurt's dedicated business lounges make tight connections manageable even in winter fog delays, a recurring seasonal headache. Delta's strength lies in loyalty positioning and Sky Club access at JFK, but the eventual partner-carrier hop into Skopje is usually the least luxurious segment of the trip, so front-load your comfort on the long-haul portion.
Because pricing on this route is erratic and inventory into SKP business class is thin, I'd treat January through March and October through November as your best windows, both for fares and for avoiding summer Balkan tourist congestion. My insider tip: search Skopje itineraries with Thessaloniki or Belgrade as alternate arrival airports occasionally priced lower, then arrange ground transport. Given the volatility here, setting fare alerts is genuinely the smartest move before booking.
