Frankfurt's tight but well-organized transfer process rewards passengers who avoid the earliest morning arrivals, when immigration and security queues swell; Munich, by contrast, tends to move faster and is my preferred hub when Lufthansa's schedule allows it. If routing via JFK on Delta, build in extra buffer time given Terminal 4's unpredictable security lines, especially in summer. ITA Airways handles the Bologna leg well, with reliable short-haul business service and quick baggage turnaround at BLQ, a compact airport that rewards travelers who skip checked luggage when possible.
Shoulder season—April, May, September, and October—consistently offers the best combination of fare value and pleasant Emilia-Romagna weather, avoiding both winter's thin schedules and summer's inflated demand. One insider trick: search Delta availability into Milan or Rome first, then price a separate ITA connection to Bologna, since award and revenue fares on the Italy-terminus routing often undercut through-fares. Given how erratic pricing is on this three-airline, multi-hub route, setting up automated fare alerts is the only reliable way to catch the right window before it closes.
