Bucharest rarely gets the business class attention it deserves, yet the route from O'Hare rewards travelers willing to think beyond nonstop convenience. There is no direct service between Chicago and Bucharest; every itinerary in business class from Chicago to Bucharest routes through a European or Turkish hub, with total travel time typically running 14 to 17 hours including connection. TAROM (RO) operates the Bucharest end of things with codeshare partners, but the strongest premium experiences come from Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, both of which offer one-stop routings that beat TAROM's own long-haul limitations, since TAROM doesn't fly the transatlantic segment itself.
My preferred routing after years on this corridor is Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, where you can experience the airline's newer Allegris business class on select 787 and A350 rotations from ORD — though be aware Allegris isn't yet fleet-wide, so check your aircraft type before booking if that seat matters to you. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the other strong contender, and it's my personal favorite for this route: their Istanbul lounge is one of the best business-class lounges anywhere, with a full brasserie, live cooking stations, and even a putting green, making a long layover feel like a destination in itself rather than dead time. From Istanbul, the short hop to Bucharest keeps you in Turkish's reliable business class product throughout. One insider tip: flying Istanbul-routed itineraries on Tuesdays or Wednesdays tends to open up better business award and upgrade space, since Turkish's weekend transatlantic flights skew heavily leisure and fill faster in premium cabins.
Seasonality matters enormously here — January through March and again in October and November are consistently the softest months for fares, as Romania's tourism season quiets down and corporate travel between Chicago and Central/Eastern Europe dips. Given how much itineraries and pricing shift week to week across Lufthansa's and Turkish's connecting hubs, setting up fare alerts is the smartest way to catch a strong business class fare before it disappears.
