Tivat's tiny coastal airport, tucked beneath the Adriatic peaks, isn't built for long-haul arrivals — which is exactly why the routing matters so much. There is no nonstop option for business class from San Diego to Tivat, so the journey becomes a study in connections, and the most reliable path runs through Munich or Frankfurt on Lufthansa, then a short Croatia Airlines (OU) or Lufthansa regional hop down into Montenegro. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the other credible option, and I've used both routings enough to say plainly: for the transatlantic backbone, Lufthansa's long-haul cabin is the better investment of your miles or cash, especially now that select 787 and A350 aircraft feature the new Allegris business suite with sliding privacy doors — a meaningful upgrade over the airline's older staggered seats.
The smarter play, though, is Istanbul. Turkish Airlines' business class on the San Diego–Istanbul long-haul sectors (typically routed via a US gateway connection, since Turkish doesn't fly SAN directly) includes their well-regarded flatbed seating and a full à la carte service that outshines the shorter European legs, and IST's business lounge is genuinely worth the layover time — it's less a lounge than a small terminal unto itself. From Istanbul, the short TK or OU connection into Tivat is straightforward, and Podgorica occasionally serves as a useful alternate arrival airport if Tivat availability is tight in peak summer.
Seasonality here is pronounced: Montenegro's coast gets swamped with leisure traffic from June through August, which thins premium award space and inflates fares, so April, May, September, and October are your windows for both better pricing and a saner Adriatic experience — warm enough for the Bay of Kotor, quiet enough to actually enjoy business class comfort on arrival. One insider tip: book the Munich connection with at least a two-hour buffer, since Lufthansa's regional gates to Adriatic destinations are often a long walk from the long-haul arrival terminal. Given how fragmented this routing is across three carriers, setting up automated fare alerts is the most efficient way to catch the rare moments when pricing and availability align.
